It`s Getting Even More International Sailing Now

Travemuender Woche - It`s Getting Even More International Sailing Now
TRAVEMÜNDE, GERMANY-(23-7-2003) Travemuende. It’s the beginning of the second half of the Travemuende week, many championships are sailed and the foreigners had their big time on Wednesday 23 July. Far in front, the British 29er and Musto Skiff teams dominated their fleets in the European Championships, while the locals have their bows in front in the Hobie Tiger Euro and the Australians go big in the A-Cat Euro. Again races could only be started in the afternoon, because the big summer heat covered the bight of Luebeck with dead calm in the morning, but afterwards the sailing continued until 8 pm in the evening.

16-year old Tom Smedley and his crew Steve Wilson lead the European Championship in the 29er class after three races in an international fleet of 51 starters. Compatriots and holding World Champions David Evans (17) and Richard Peacock followed with equal points on second place.

Fully in British hands is the Musto Skiff class. The first seven teams of the 15 boat strong fleet are sailing under the Union Jack flag. Matthew Toone is leading after three races, tied with Richard Stenhouse in second place.

The Russian Alexander Nikolaev leads after two races in the Olympic Laser class, Moritz Almes and Thomas Endom from Germany take the places. The international contender fleet sailed two races and saw the Dane Søren Andreasen in front, tied with Karsten Kraus from Kiel, Germany.

On the third day of the A-Cat European Championship, favourite Glenn Ashby from Australia could finally take over the leading position after six races and five straight firsts. Fellow countryman Scott Anderson follows closely, but Sascha Wallmer from Switzerland in third position is already far behind the leading two.

The lead in the Hobie Tiger class went to Ulf and Susanne Hahn from Kiel, Germany after two races in the beginning of their Euros Bredendiek/Froehmer following. The fleet of 67 Hobie Cat 14, starting their World Championship, sailed two races and three Germans leading the international competition. Joachim Wegner scores first in the single handed multihull fleet. Second place is occupied from Jochen Sierck and Frank Suchanek following as third.
